M4 U3 Activity 3: Personal Reflection and Next Steps

Project Description

Overview At the midpoint of the module, it is time to reflect on what you have learned so far in terms of managing the learning environment and how prepared you feel to implement these strategies in your own classroom. Performance and/or Learning Outcomes

  • Candidates reflect on learning management strategies and research strategies for managing student behavior

What will you do?

  1. Review the learning management strategies you have created thus far for your own classroom in your Learning Environment Plan.

  2. Reflect on, “How will these strategies impact student learning and your own overall professional effectiveness as a teacher?” Think about, “What are the challenges you have faced or anticipate in managing the learning environment and student behavior?”

  3. Review the following programs and prepare to discuss in the next Virtual Classroom which one will best fit in your current or future classroom:

    • Whole Brain Teaching

    • Professional Learning Communities

    • Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

(The above information was cited from the TEACH-NOW Teacher Preparation Certificate Program)

My Reflection

I would like to start by saying that I am enjoying this module a lot and found it very useful. This is my favorite module so far, and the biggest benefit has been to reinforce several procedures and norms I have already had as part of my teaching repertoire for some time. As well as the principles of social-emotional learning, and whole brain teaching, have been incredibly useful. I feel like I have always tried to include aspects of these in my teaching, though until completing this module, was unable to put a name to what I was doing.

Something I have always done, and seen a lot of benefit in doing, is to have a kind of ‘cool-down’ corner in my classroom to allow students to have a safe, calm space to cool down if they are emotional. Moreover, I designed a lot of game-based learning activities which involve hearing, seeing, speaking, moving, and reasoning to make my classes more fun and engaging. Now, I understand that they belong to the field of social-emotional learning and whole brain teaching that can incorporate the whole brain to allow students to create memories that are stored throughout the brain instead of in a single area. Furthermore, learning about these has helped to not only justify what I do in my teaching but also to build on these foundations with clear goals and guiding principles.

I think my biggest challenge has been and will continue to be dealing with unmotivated students, and I believe that incorporating clearer routines and norms will be able to help. Adding structure like this to my lessons will help my students to understand why they are learning and how following a process leads to learning, which is motivating.

All in all, the module has helped to make my procedures stronger and smoother and given me a boost of confidence in knowing that what I am doing has a lot of benefits for my students.
