Benefits of evaluating and being evaluated utilizing a rubric

M8 U2 A1 You Evaluate the Video!

Project Description

Overview Candidates often report that clinical practice is the most valuable component of their teacher education preparation. The feedback you receive from your mentor and your instructor is intended to improve your practice. In order to experience what giving feedback is like, you will be working with videos submitted by former Teach-Now candidates. You will annotate four lesson videos and evaluate them using the Teach-Now rubric for Standards 1 and 2. You will write a reflection on the process of evaluating and being evaluating. By completing this activity, you will gain a deeper understanding of the process of evaluating using a rubric. Be certain that your positively-stated critical feedback clearly demonstrates how the lesson can be improved. When you offer suggestions and recommendations, give specific examples of how they may be carried out. Performance Outcomes

  • Candidates will analyze the importance of using a rubric to evaluate teaching lesson videos and demonstrate how to provide meaningful feedback.

What will you do

  1. Watch and annotate the four teaching lesson videos on the Submission tab using Standards 1 and 2 of the TEACH-NOW Clinical Rubric. In your annotations, include the following:

    • Identification of teaching strategies

    • Connections with the rubric elements of Standards 1 & 2

    • Connections with your current or future teaching practice

    • Reflections on the effectiveness of the strategies

  2. Identify strengths and offer suggestions for growth for all four lesson videos.

  3. Evaluate all four lesson videos using the TEACH-NOW Clinical Rubric on the Submission page, and provide justifications for your ratings.

  4. In the Discussion Forum, write a reflection on the process and benefits of evaluating and being evaluated utilizing a rubric.

Report Requirements

  • Lesson video annotations, rubric evaluations, and overall feedback summary

  • Written reflection on the process of evaluating in the Discussion Forum

My Work

The process of evaluating the other teachers and self- evaluation are very helpful for my learning process, as it allows for the assessment of my progress and the identification of areas that need improvement. Utilizing a rubric as a tool for evaluation provides a clear and consistent system for assessing student work, and offers numerous benefits for both the evaluator and the student.

One of the key benefits of using a rubric is that it promotes transparency and clarity in the evaluation process. It clearly outlines the criteria and expectations for student work, and allows for a clear understanding of where a student stands in relation to those expectations. Additionally, the rubric provides specific and actionable feedback for the student, identifying areas of strength and areas for improvement. This helps to motivate students to work on improving their performance.

Another advantage of using a rubric is its ability to streamline the evaluation process. It allows for efficient and consistent evaluation of multiple students, ensuring that all students are held to the same standards.

Personally, evaluating other teachers has been a valuable learning experience for me. It has exposed me to a diverse range of teaching styles, classroom setups, and technology usage, and has helped me to better prepare for the various classrooms I may encounter in my own teaching career. Through the use of a rubric, I have also learned that achieving excellence in any one area often requires going above and beyond the norm. Furthermore, the rubric has helped me to focus on creating well-rounded and balanced lessons, and to identify areas in which I need to make strategic plans for improvement.
