The Benefits & Challenges of Using the Virtual Classroom and Video Tools

Updated: Aug 2, 2022

Using video as a tool for learning and teaching during the virtual class or later in the Discussion Forum. Share experiences, common challenges faced, and possible solutions for the same.

People today are using educational videos as a tool for learning from basic skills to almost everything. Personally I love to use YouTube for learning cooking, practicing Yoga and sharing some fun videos related to my class project in school.

There are many benefits of using virtual Classroom and Video as a tool in learning and teaching, and I would like to share the best two reasons from my experience.

Benefits of Using the Virtual Classroom, Video Tools and solutions

1. Support distance learning

It can break down some barriers, such as location as we can learn and watch from anywhere with an internet connection, it is helpful for students who are not able to attend online classes especially when self-isolating during covid-19 ,and teachers can also reach students from all over the world without the need to travel.

2. Virtual classroom and video offer flexibility

It is very convenient for those who need tutoring or review sessions, as you can record online the virtual classroom to rewind, pause, or skip throughout the video and even set the subtitle simultaneous translation function to understand better for class discussions, feedback or review particular areas.

Challenges of Using the Virtual Classroom, Video Tools and solutions

1. Ensuring the safety of internet for students

It is important to secure devices from online threats and safeguard students online whether it is a school owned device or at home. School IT administrators and parents should ensure that students can not access harmful and inappropriate content online.

2. Students cannot concentrate

It is challenging to keep students focused in a physical classroom but it may be even worse in the virtual classroom as teachers cannot interact directly and see if students are engaged in the task at hand or if students are distracted by online videos and games or other.

The way I deal with distractions is by using open- ended questions to connect relevant examples from everyday life and guide learners to make personal connections with the topic. In addition, I engage students by enhancing course materials with online activities as part of the class, such as Youtobe videos and games from kahoot ,wordwall, and liveworksheets. I also request students to create their own project with google slide and share it with me so that I can check it, and supervise the progress of students at the same time.
