M3 U1 Activity 2: Student Centered Learning

Project Description

Overview We talk a lot about student-centered learning, but what exactly does it look like? How do we know when our teaching practices are indeed student-centered? By investigating and discovering both specific student-centered activities and general qualities of a student-centered approach, you will deepen, define, and internalize your own understanding of and insights into student-centered learning. Student-centered learning is primarily an approach to teaching. Although there are many well defined and time tested student-centered activities, your goal should be to design your own activities, and tweak those of others, to meet the specific needs of your students. In this activity, you will collaboratively research and identify student centered solutions with your cohort in a project-based context.

Performance outcomes:

  • Candidates research learning theories and approaches and use this knowledge to create effective student centered learning experiences

What will you do?

1. Create a single Wakelet (or a similar content curation tool such as Padlet, Wiki, Wix, etc.) on student-centered learning strategies with your cohort. Any one member can create the Wakelet and invite the other members to edit it or create sub-collections within the Wake.

2. Answer each of the following questions, making references to established learning theories to support your answers. Include examples of specific activities or implementations.

  • How could you design the physical environment of the classroom, including technology, to be conducive to student-centered learning? Alternately, how would you design the learning tool kit of your students’ online learning environment?

  • What are some student-centered approaches or techniques that are based on or require collaboration?

  • How can you implement assessment so that it enhances student-centered learning?

  • What student-centered approaches or techniques can you use to address differentiation?

  • What student-centered approaches or techniques include physical movement as a central element?

  • What are some student-centered approaches or techniques for reading?

3. Your cohort is encouraged to include multiple approaches in the answers. Include a reference list of all your sources in your site page.

Report Requirements: Link to a cohort Wakelet on Student Centered Learning strategies.

Notes This is a cooperative learning activity, where every member of the group must participate to get a common group grade. If you have non-participating members in your cohort, please inform your instructor, who can make necessary changes to your group structure.
