Module 25: Learning in a Linguistically Diverse Environment
Unit 1: Linguistic Theory and Language Acquisition
Activity 2: What is Language and How is it Developed?
Project Description
Overview
This activity is an introduction to linguistics, the study of language. You will learn basic linguistic theory as it relates to first language acquisition and second language learning. You will begin to answer the questions What is language? and How does language develop? Throughout this unit, you will focus on the main domains of linguistic development -- reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary -- and develop personal working definitions of key concepts.
Performance outcomes
Candidates will produce and provide a rationale for individual working definitions of key terms relevant to language teaching and learning -- language, language learning, and language teaching.
Candidates will evaluate and synthesize multiple working definitions of key terms relevant to language teaching and learning -- language, language learning, and language teaching.
What will you do?
Prior to the VC, review the definitions of -- language, linguistics, applied linguistics, education (see Activity Resources).
In the VC, collaborate in small groups to review your findings on the definitions and as a small group, write new group-determined definitions of these three disciplinary terms -- language, language learning, and language teaching.
Create an artifact that records your group discussion (Padlet, Google Doc, Prezi, etc.) Post your group artifact in the Discussion Forum. Respond to the other group posts.
Individually, create a vlog reflection that includes your personal definitions for three disciplinary terms - language, language learning, and language teaching. Answer the question: What are your personal definitions of language, language learning, and language teaching? Include in your reflection how your personal definitions were influenced by the discussion in your small group. The Vlog should not just be you talking, but should include a digital presentation and references at the end in APA format and range between 5-7 minutes in length.
