Understand the Different types of Assessments

Updated: Oct 19, 2022

U5 U1 Activity 1: Different Types of Assessments

Project Description

Overview Assessment is key to effective teaching and learning. In order to understand what our students know and are able to do, we must continuously assess student progress. This helps us to inform our instruction and determine next steps for learning. Assessment can take many different forms and be used in a variety of ways. It is important to understand different types of assessments we can use in the classroom. We must also be able to determine whether we are using assessment as learning, of learning, or for learning. In this activity, you will explore the different types of assessments and consider when each can be used in the learning process. Performance outcomes

  • Candidates will examine different types of assessments to determine the purpose and role that assessments play in student learning.

What will you do?

  1. Read the information under the activity resources regarding the importance of assessment as well as the types of assessment. Explore other resources online to start developing your understanding of the different types of assessment as well as when and why each type of assessment is used.

  2. In the Discussion Forum, brainstorm types of assessments you can use in your classroom. Share resources you find for categorizing or identifying types of assessments.

  3. In small groups, create a mind map that includes the different types of assessments that can be used in the classroom. At a minimum, be sure to include:

  4. Under each type of assessment indicate:

    • What the assessment is and why it is used

    • An example of the type of assessment

    • Add other information to the mind map that you may find useful such as links, images, or resources.

Report requirements

  • Discussion Forum posts

  • Group mind map of different types of assessments

Note:

  • Assessment of, as, and for learning

1. Assessment for learning – A way to provide teacher with a clear snapshot of student learning and understanding as teacher teach – allowing teacher to adjust and allow the assessments to inform teacher's instruction. (e.g., formative and diagnostic assessments), not graded.

2. Assessment of learning – A way to find out what students have learned and if they are aligning to curriculum or grade-level standards. (e.g., exams, portfolios, final projects, standardized tests, summative assessments) which graded.

3. Assessment as learning – Actively involves students in the learning process. (e.g., self-assessments and peer assessments)
