How to Use Assessment Data to Inform Instruction

M5 U3 Activity 3: Using Assessment Data to Inform Instruction

Project Description

Overview Data disaggregation is extremely important in order to meet the needs of each individual student. This project will prepare you for data driven instruction and disaggregation that is regularly done in schools around the world. Data is collected frequently in classrooms from quizzes, formative assessments, summative assessments, student attendance, participation, etc. The question is: now that we have this data, what do we do with it? In this activity, you will be using spreadsheets created especially for the activity. Using this data, you will decide who needs remediation or acceleration, decide how to differentiate instruction, and form instruction groups of students. You will explore homogeneous and heterogeneous grouping and analyze when it is appropriate to use these groupings in your classroom. Performance outcomes

  • Candidates will analyze data to inform instruction, differentiation, and student grouping.

What will you do?

  1. Use the sample data in the Activity Resources, or data you have collected from your class, identify how you will group students based on abilities into heterogenous and homogenous groups for a lesson or content topic. Assume the data to be for your students in your subject area and grade level. There is one sample sheet for primary and another one for secondary. Download and modify any one of them to make it specific to your students and subject.

  2. Create a spreadsheet to organize the data and groupings. On your spreadsheet be sure to include the following:

    • Organized, modified data

    • Heterogeneous and homogeneous groupings based on the data

    • Links to activities that can be utilized in an in-person and online environment that meet the needs of all students, including students with special needs and gifted students

  3. Create a visual presentation or chart (infographic, poster, video, etc.) of the groupings outlining the strategies you will utilize with each group and including direct links to the activities you would use with each group. Present an example of how you will create mixed student groups of varying abilities and talents for a particular lesson or project. Be sure to include changes you would make in groupings based on the activity, strategy or content being taught.

  4. Peer review at least one other Cohort member’s presentation and highlight the glows (strengths) and grows (areas of improvement) and leave your feedback comment on the submission page. Also, add a comment with your submission indicating whose work you have reviewed.

Report Requirements

  • Spreadsheet to include modified data as well as groupings and notes

  • Presentation on student grouping, differentiation and instruction based on sample Summative Assessment Data

  • Peer review one other Cohort member’s submission

Notes Special education teachers will explain how students were initially grouped and how they can move from one group to another. How will these students work in an inclusion classroom? Your visual presentation is an impressive demonstration of data-driven and student-centered instruction, two critical skills for effective teaching. Include this presentation in your e-portfolio and consider sharing on social media to demonstrate your growth as an educator among friends and colleagues!
