How to Communicate Results to Parents

Updated: Nov 16, 2022

M5 U4 Activity 2: Communicating Results to Parents

Project Description

Overview Developing partnerships with parents/caregivers is an important factor in promoting student learning. Positive relationships with parents/caregivers can be developed early in the school year by reaching out and introducing yourself. Consistently updating them with positive feedback on their children’s performance develops trust. Working together requires teachers to listen to parents/caregivers and collaborate on strategies that support student learning. Periodically throughout the school year, you should meet with parents/caregivers to discuss the academic and social development of their children.

Performance outcomes

  • Candidates will evaluate strategies for communicating assessment results to parents/caregivers and building partnerships for setting high expectations and using positive reinforcements to improve student performance

What will you do?

  1. Discuss with your Cohort in the Virtual Classroom and Discussion Forum, positive and negative experiences when interacting in parent-teacher meetings. Share do’s and don’ts with your peers in these discussions.

  2. Work with a partner to address any one of the following scenarios (partners and scenarios should be decided with your instructor during the virtual class session):

    • Communicating test score results of a student who is performing below the expected proficiency level

    • Communicating overall academic progress and performance of a student who has not been performing to the level of his/her capacity

    • The social skills or conduct of a student who has been misbehaving in class

  3. Create a plan that describes how you will:

    • Share the test results with parents / guardian

    • Build a parent-teacher partnership that includes setting high expectations for the student and making appropriate use of positive reinforcement to achieve the mutually decided goals. Consider expectations of parents in remote vs. in-person learning and how you might address student concerns.

    • Build relationships, or meet with parents, in a virtual or remote school setting.

  4. Create a presentation to illustrate the selected scenario and plan using Storyboarder, Powtoon, or Canva.

  5. Write the specific responsibilities of each partner in the project.

Report Requirements

  • Plan for presentation of given scenario

  • Presentation utilizing Storyboarder, Powtoon, or Canva
