M2 U1 Activity 3: Teaching Digital Citizenship
Project Description
Overview Students today are digital natives and are inherently connected to technology in different ways. As teachers and parents, it is our responsibility to ensure that students learn how to navigate the various pitfalls and advantages of the everchanging digital landscape. It is important to teach students how to be responsible digital citizens and empower them with the tools and competencies to safely maneuver themselves in the digital world. Similarly, with freely accessible information, it is important to teach students how to responsibly use information that is freely available without plagiarizing. Performance outcome
Candidates will explain responsible digital citizenship and how to avoid plagiarism to their students and their parents/guardians.
What will you do? 1.Watch the three videos in the activity resources about digital citizenship and plagiarism. Reflect upon the following questions as you watch the videos:
What is digital citizenship and why is it important to teach students about their responsibilities as a digital citizen?
How could you apply the 5 competencies of digital citizenship in your classroom?
What is plagiarism and why is it important to teach students to give credit where credit is due?
How would you distinguish between intentional and unintentional plagiarism?
2. Assume that you have been asked to set up a workshop in your school for students and their parents about digital citizenship and plagiarism. Create two handouts, one on digital citizenship and the other on plagiarism for students and their parents/guardians with tips and tricks to recognize and avoid plagiarism and be a responsible digital citizen. The handouts should include a short list of dos and don’ts that can be easily remembered and implemented by students and their parents/guardians. Make it visually appealing and each handout should be no more than one page long.
