Designing Formative Assessments

Updated: Oct 26, 2022

M5 U1 Activity 3: Designing Formative Assessments

Project Description

Overview In order to be an effective educator, a teacher must frequently check for student understanding. Such checks are called formative assessments. Formative assessments may take many forms, and are applicable in both in-person and online learning environments. Understanding different forms of assessment before beginning the clinical portion of your program will enable you to easily incorporate formative assessment into your planning and practice. You will consider accommodations and modifications you can use to ensure you reach all learners in your classroom. Performance outcomes

  • Candidates will design and modify formative assessments to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom.

What will you do?

  1. In the Virtual Classroom and in the Discussion Forum collaborate with your cohort about assessment tools (online or offline) and assessment strategies that you have utilized in the past or discovered in the learning resources.

  2. Utilizing the Planning Formative Assessments Template in the Activity Resources, create three formative assessments that are appropriate for the grade level and subject you are or will be teaching. For example, write an exit ticket for a lesson you may be teaching your students during your clinical practice. One of your assessments must include an online tool.

  3. For each of the three assessments you have created, write a description to answer the following questions:

    • What are you trying to find out by administering this assessment?

    • How will you utilize the results of this assessment to plan future instruction?

    • How will you modify the assessment, or include accommodations, to meet the needs of English language learners and students with special needs? Assume at least one ELL student and one student with special needs is in the classroom.

    • How will you modify the implementation of the formative assessments in virtual and hybrid learning environments?

    • How will the formative assessment help promote a student centered learning environment in your classroom?

  4. Use an assessment tool such as Kahoot or Edpuzzle to demonstrate at least one of the three identified assessments.

Report Requirements

  • Completed Planning Formative Assessments Template for three formative assessments

  • Kahoot, Edpuzzle, or similar online tool to demonstrate one assessment

Notes If you are already teaching, you can test out the three formative assessments by giving them to your students and making necessary modifications to it. Discuss the edits you made to your assessment, if any, in your descriptions. You can do this step during your clinical practice if you don’t have access to a classroom. If you are an early childhood or elementary teacher, examine the resources related to the Science of Reading and be certain that your formative assessments allow you to monitor and adapt your teaching to ensure mastery of the skills being taught. If you are a secondary teacher, examine resources related to your specific content area and be certain that your formative assessments allow you to monitor and adapt your teaching to ensure mastery of the skills being taught. If you are a language teacher (i.e. Spanish, French, Arabic, etc.), the context may be slightly different when it comes to English Language Learners. Consider how this may connect with your situation and plan accordingly.
